The majority of nutrients need to be broken down before they can be absorbed by the body. This occurs through enzymes from the mouth, stomach, pancreas and small intestine and with bile from the liver. Once this process has taken place, absorption occurs mainly in the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum). If you have had your stomach removed, or other parts of your small intestine, these are the possible deficiencies that can occur and may require different strategies for absorption.
